The ethnographic process- all of the various activities and research methods which the anthropologist must undertake in order to obtain a profound and objective understanding of culture being studied. Also involves the anthropologist expressing feelings felt during fieldwork, and relations built w/ members of community.

Ethnography- a written account of a society.
E.g. Chagnon’s study of the SSS (small-scale society) Yanomamo.
They have ‘folk knowledge’ (knowledge specific to them)

Set-centred network- a network based on groups of individuals linked to one another.

Ego-centred network- a network centring on a particular individual and including all links between this person and others in his community.

Armchair anthropologist- anthropologist who collects data from documents written by others rather than carrying out fieldwork.

Objective

  • Being on the ‘outside of the idea’
  • Supported by proven theory
  • Less feeling involved
  • Shared by more than one person

Subjective

  • Being in the ‘middle’ of the idea
  • Culture shock- the sense of confusion and disorientation fieldworkers may experience upon entering the field.
