Does the iPhone support Google Gears?
Yes, yes, I’d much rather see a proper API with access to the hardware for the iPhone instead of an Ajax one, but at Google’s devloper day, they claimed Safari support would be released for Google Gears very soon.
If Safari on the iPhone supports Gears, the Ajax only limitation seems a lot less limiting (even if it means we’ll never have Skype). Lots of people seem very upset about the idea that widgets on the iPhone will only work with a network connection, but gears should pretty easily circumvent that limitation.
That said, I’m not too hopeful if it doesn’t support flash movies. That, and, it will probably go through a revision or two before we can get them here in Australia anyway.

I’m skeptical that it will support Google Gears but I really hope so. I also hope that Google Docs will be compatible with Safari soon so I can use it to edit documents on-the-go when I really need to. (For example, I keep a spreadsheet to track my spending each week and I’d love to be able to do this from my mobile phone/iPhone, rather than waiting to get on the computer and do it. I think many of the windows devices have Word and Excel support but I’d like to have something I can access from BOTH my computer and mobile phone easily)

I imagine if it were going to be included at launch, it probably would have come out in the WWDC sessions http://www.macrumors.com/2007/06/19/iphone-web-development-guidelines/ - I wonder if anyone asked.
It wouldn’t surprise me if it did show up in a later revision though (given Google’s tight involvement with the google maps application).
