Does it bug anyone else when cover versions have different lyrics to the original?

I’ve been listening to the ‘She Will Have Her Way: The Songs of Tim & Neil Finn’ album which came out a little while back. Basically, it’s a bunch of Australian female singers doing cover versions of Tim and Neil Finn songs. On the whole, very nice stuff. The one which is bugging me, however, is ‘Persuasion’ which is sung here by Stellar (quite a nice voice, but I can’t say I’ve ever heard of her before).

So anyway, here’s the line

After all the foolish things that we’ve been through
I will always be a man who’s open to
Persuasion

I guess that is pretty gender specific, but I honestly wouldn’t have a problem with hearing a woman singing that line. Just to be extra grating, they even change the alternate line through the song, using both ‘I will always be a woman open to’ and ‘I will always be someone who’s open to’.

On the other hand, I remember a friend of mine being quite annoyed by the ‘Save Ferris’ version of ‘Come on Eileen’ because a woman was singing it. I guess you can never please everyone.
