I can’t believe this whole Intelligent Design being taught as science thing has reached Australia.

Thankfully the headlines, as you can see above, sit pretty solidly on my side, but as I think I’ve said before, it’s sad that this even needs discussion. Don’t want to believe in evolution? Fine with me, but as far as science in concerned there is no credible alternative. Want to teach creationism as religion? Fine with me, as long as the distinction between science and religion is made clear.

Science and religion are almost entirely orthogonal ways of understanding the world, and will only truly be reconciled in your own mind. Nothing will be gained by teaching ’science’ which doesn’t stand up to scientific analysis, except perhaps a generation of children who do not understand the scientific method as well as they might have.
